Arts Experience students combine an immersive English syllabus and full activity and excursion programme, with specialist workshops in drama, dance, music. King Edward’s School

King Edward’s is a prestigious boarding school founded by King Edward VI in 1553. The school has excellent on-site facilities including modern classrooms with smart boards, a dance studio, and all-weather pitches across the 100-acre site. The school is located in a quiet countryside village just over an hour’s drive from central London, providing an ideal location for young summer school students. Nearby cities can be accessed easily including Brighton, Canterbury, Windsor and Oxford.

The school has a unique place in the story of British education. Christian vision, a Tudor palace and a boy King (Edward VI) each feature in the creation of our distinctive school. Care and friendliness permeate our day to day life on campus. Visitors often comment on the happy, relaxed yet purposeful and supportive atmosphere in School. Boys and girls, some of whom are brothers and sisters, mix naturally whatever their social or cultural backgrounds. Any well-ordered community needs basic rules and leaders. We therefore try to develop leadership at all levels and an understanding of responsibility in every aspect of school life. In senior years, pupils are encouraged to take on roles within the school community and to develop a sense of service to others.

Godalming

An ancient market and coaching town delightfully situated on the picturesque River Wey, where to this day cattle graze on the waterside meadows and canal boats rest up against the wharf. Godalming boasts many local, wonderful attractions such as National Trust properties, the town’s sports facilities and historic and cultural places of interest. Local festivals abound and a warm welcome is assured. Unique, historic and interesting architecture can be found in abundance in the High Street and Church Street along with walks in our delightful countryside.

Programme Details

Lessons

This course will help students to build language skills and confidence gradually through the multi-level syllabus and enable students to explore performing arts. Students share English lessons with students on Bucksmore Summer. During some periods of the week, students are separated from the main group to take part in their chosen specialism. Lessons are taught through a combination of general English tuition, project sessions, academic English, conversation classes and excursion link lessons.

Arts Workshops

All workshops are run by current professional west end performers. Each week learners will explore different themes allowing students to learn about all aspects of British performance. Themes for 2019 included Shakespeare’s Mid Summer Nights Dream, west-end hit The Lion King, as well as J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka.

Projects

Project sessions enable students to use English for the completion of real-world tasks with an authentic purpose. Students receive vocabulary and grammar input in the first part of the project session and are then placed into groups. Groups are provided with a project guideline which they should follow and aim to complete in the preparation session. The weekly project culminates in a presentation evening in which groups display and present their work.

Activities

Students have a full programme of fun activities to enable them to gain a better cultural understanding of the United Kingdom and create lasting memories. The activity programme are planned and organised by a dedicated Activity Manager. They will respond to student feedback and requests and provide exact weekly timetables a few days before the start of the following week. It enables the Activity Manager to minimise any repetition and give students a unique experience every week. Example of the On-site Activities

Bucksmore Olympics

Students take on different sporting challenges in teams which challenge students’ agility, spatial awareness and teamwork skills

Egg Drop Challenge

Students compete in teams to create protective wrapping for their eggs so that when it is thrown from a great height it will survive, unbroken.

Lip Sync Battle

A student favourite, each team has the opportunity to put their best foot forward and pick a song to lip sync to. Performing hit songs in English, students build their confidence while having fun.

Sports Choice

A variety of different sporting options are available for students, such as tennis, swimming, football, netball, touch rugby, cricket, basketball and badminton.

Excursions

Students have two full-day excursions per week to enable them to explore and gain a better cultural understanding of the United Kingdom. Each week students will go to popular UK destinations. The excursions are planned and organised by a dedicated Activity Manager. They will respond to student feedback and requests and provide exact weekly timetables a few days before the start of the following week. It enables the Activity Manager to minimise any repetition and give students a unique experience every week. Examples of the excursions:

London (Every Week)

Students visit sites such as Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, Horse Guards Parade, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament & Westminster Abbey.

British Castles

An iconic part of the UK’s history, students will visit castles that have stood for over 700 years, including Hever Castle and Leeds Castle.

Canterbury

In the historic city of Canterbury, students will have the opportunity to visit its outstanding Cathedral and enjoy the city’s combination of town, coast and countryside.

Thorpe Park

With seven roller-coasters and five water rides, Thorpe Park is one of the biggest and most exciting Theme Parks in Europe, and understandably a student favourite!

Windsor

Students are given the opportunity to visit the home of the British Royal Family at their residence Windsor Castle and explore the historic market town.

Portsmouth

Port city and naval base on England’s south coast, students will enjoy the British seaside and get the chance to take in the city from 170-metres up on the Emirates Spinnaker Tower.

Accommodation

Student accommodation at King Edward’s is split into several boarding houses, named Edward, Tudor and Ridley. Bedrooms are made up of single, twin and 4-bed rooms, with separate female and male accommodation. Bathrooms are shared between 4-6 students. Laundry is available on site. Once per week, laundry will be collected by King Edward’s School staff and returned the next day.

Airport Transfer

Bucksmore offers a complimentary airport transfer service on transfer days for flights arriving/departing between 10:00 and 20:00 at either London Heathrow Airport (LHR) or London Gatwick Airport (LGW).

Students requesting private transfers outside of these destinations and times will be subject to additional charges.

Meal

All meal included. Healthy meals with a mix of English and international dishes served. Vegetarian options are always available. Special dietary requirements are accommodated.

Care

Every Bucksmore location has a residential management team, and a minimum staff-student ratio of 1:7. High staff to student ratios ensure all students are looked after. There is always a trained first aider on-site, and students are supervised 24 hours a day. They take great pride in the excellence of their academic content, the excitement of their social programme, and most importantly, the safety and wellbeing of all Bucksmore students.

Staff

Each location has a Centre Manager, Activity Manager and Director of Studies available for all students to approach with any problems. Bucksmore Counsellors are more than just teachers; they provide a high level of care and guidance for all students. All staff are background checked.

Pastoral Care

Bucksmore summer schools strive to create a warm and welcoming “family atmosphere” where all students and Counsellors know each other well.

Cancellation

The cancellation of the course must be made in writing (email, or post) in legible and unambiguous English. Any cancellation shall only be of effect from the date it is received by us in writing and the following fees shall apply (before the Start Date):

30+ days : 35% of the total amount

7-29 Days: 70% of the total amount

0-6 Days: 100% of the total amount

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they obtain the appropriate VISA for their time in the UK covering the course dates, and that they comply with all other UK entry requirements. Under no circumstances will the course organizer make any refund on grounds of lack of visa or similar travel documents required to enter the UK legitimately. In a situation where a course needs to be cancelled due to a visa rejection (and upon supply of the original visa rejection letter at least 7 days before the start date) all fees will be refunded minus an administration fee of £350.

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, teaching, assessment, (CEFR), was created by the Council of Europe to be a language standard that describes the ability of English language learners in speaking, reading, writing and listening and measures learners’ learning outcomes at different stages.

This standard is widely recognised and used by educational institutions, enterprises and governments around the world and provides general guidance for the development of language syllabuses, curriculum and textbook design, language testing, etc.

Additionally, many internationally recognised English language tests, such as IELTS and Aptis, are associated with this standard as a reference for test score grading. In describing a language learner’s ability, in terms of speaking, reading, listening and writing, CEFR is broadly categorised into the Levels below:
