Each junior course consists of theoretical, practical and group work. The aim is to increase knowledge, improve confidence and develop the skills to work with others. The programme is operated by Concord College.

Academies

All Junior & Senior summer programmes include a choice of 2 additional timetabled lessons of Concord Plus. Concord Plus is a series of structured master classes and workshops that run daily throughout the week 15.30-17.00 (excluding Wednesdays). Each session runs twice per week (five times per course) and provides students with applied learning opportunities through a wide range of social activities, on a topic of their interest, and includes specialist subject tuition, practical activities and opportunities for social interaction. Some of these activities incur an additional fee. Places are limited for some of the subjects.

Lessons

Concord College welcomes students from all over the world and the local area into its vibrant and varied community. Students could choose one of the programmes below: General English combined with Activities, General English combined with Science, General Science combined with Activities, General Science combined with Science, Future Leaders with Debating and Public Speaking or Select Science.

General English combined with Activities

For students aged 15+ only. Students will benefit from 21 hours per week of laboratory based learning studying two subjects consisting of theory and practical sessions. They will study content designed to prepare students for study at A Level standard or equivalent.

Activities

Concord has a Leisure Team made up of Art, Outdoor, Performing Arts and Sports staff. These teams arrange a wide range of activities for students to participate in after lessons and at the weekend, both on and off campus, which are suitable for all ages and abilities.

Juniors have an organised and supervised timetable of events after lessons that they are encouraged to participate in. They must register at certain points with an Activity Assistant during the leisure and social times in the afternoon and evening on campus.

Seniors have the option to take part in after class activities on campus but also the freedom to socialise in the common areas with newly made friends to develop independence.

Activities on-campus

Concord benefits from a wide range of modern and well equipped facilities, which when open for students are fully supervised by qualified staff. Activities on campus are free (inclusive of the course fee), and include:

Art Rooms, Badminton, Basketball, Climbing Wall, Computers, Dance Studio, Footgolf, Golf, Gym, High Ropes, Music Rooms, Orchestra Room, Pool, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Theatre, Valleyball.

Activities off-campus

There are a number of activities arranged off-campus and some of the these may incur an additional cost(Pay at the College), for example:

Excursions

Throughout each course, students benefit from a half day trip every Wednesday afternoon, and a full day trip every weekend (typically Saturday). The location is chosen based on its journey time from Concord, its interest to students and its safety.

Some additional trips run throughout the course, which are optional and incur an additional fee (Details please refer to the Activities Section).

All students will:

Be supervised on the coach journey to the venue
Have contact details of the trip leader and accompanying staff
Have a map of the place being visited
Be shown where the meeting point is where a member of staff will be located throughout the duration of the trip
Have a card with contact details to show a retail/shop assistant, police etc if they need help

Unsupervised students will be required to check in at the meeting point at designated times throughout the trip and must remain in a minimum student group size of 4.

Supervision for students Age 10-12

Supervised for all excursions by a teacher
Ratio of 1 teacher:6 students

Supervision for students Age 13+

Students are unsupervised for all excursions unless indicated otherwise on the application form, this includes for: Enclosed parks and attractions, Small Towns, Minor Cities and Major Cities.

The Course Director will make the final decision regarding supervision.

Accommodation

The College residences are strictly all boys or all girls and are arranged so that the older students have a private en suite bathroom; the younger students will share a bathroom with 3 to 4 other students. Bedrooms, shared areas, bathrooms and showers are cleaned every weekday with bed linen changed once per week. The College has a small number of double rooms available on request.

Airport Transfer

Transfers from/to Manchester Airport and Heathrow Airport are included in the fees. Students are met by Concord ’s Staff and the coordinators provide extra care.

Manchester Airport (MAN)

Approximately 90 minutes from Concord. To use the free coach transfer flights must:

For arrivals:

Arrive on the course start date of 21 June, 6 July or 31 July
Have a flight arrival time between 08.00 and 14.00

For departures:

Depart on the course end date of 3 July, 27 July or 21 August
Have a flight departure time between 08.00 and 14.00

London Heathrow Airport (LHR)

Approximately 4.5 hours from Concord. To use the free coach transfer flights must:

For arrivals:

Arrive on the course start date of 21 June, 6 July or 31 July
Have a flight arrival time between 09.30 and 16.30

For departures:

Depart on the course end date of 3 July, 27 July or 21 August
Have a flight departure time between 09.30 and 16.30

Transfers Outside the Criteria Above

If the flights arrives/departs outside the published hours or dates detailed above, the Summer Course team will provide further information on what is available. This will usually be in the form of a Shared Transfer (when multiple students arrive on the same flight) or a Private Transfer (for solo arrivals).

Meal

The Summer School benefits from the expertise of the Main Term catering team, who work year round to provide outstanding food for all students, staff and visitors. All of the dishes are made fresh on site by the team of chefs, using fresh produce sourced locally (where possible). They can cater for all dietary requirements, providing the chefs are notified in advance, and we label allergens on food served.

The dining room has three hot serving areas offering a varied selection of food for breakfast, lunch and supper. It also benefits from a deli bar serving sandwiches, wraps and baked items, two salad bars, and a dessert counter.

In addition to the hot and cold options, they have fruit cart, fruit juices and water fountains available for students throughout the day.

Care

Concord understands that being away from home can be a very big step for both parent and child and, as a result, Concord wants to ensure that all students feel at home throughout their time at Concord. Concord ensures that all students feel safe and cared.

Safeguarding & Pastoral Team

Concord has a Safeguarding Policy in line with the UK Government statutory guidance and it is reviewed regularly. Their Safeguarding Team deal with all issues relating to student welfare from homesickness to health and wellbeing. The team work with other staff (teachers, boarding parents, activity staff, domestic staff) to monitor students closely, and intervene quickly to provide appropriate care. This may be a buddy system, a talking service such as independent listener or counselor, or a referral to the medical team.

Medical Centre

Concord has a purpose built Medical Centre with a team of qualified nurses who:

facilitate the access to medication
administer UK medication only
help any student feeling unwell
provide first aid

Whilst there is no charge to be seen by the College nurse, there may be charges incurred by students from certain countries for NHS hospital treatment. They provide insurance for all students (travel & medical) but recommend this is checked before travelling to ensure it meets individual requirements.

Junior Students (10-12)

Students aged 10 – 12 on the junior programme have the additional support of a team of Activity Assistants and are expected to register at regular times outside of lesson & mealtimes (evenings and weekends).

Electronic ID registration for students

Students are issued with an electronic ID badge on arrival and are required to register electronically at key points throughout the day. The Concord Safeguarding Team can quickly locate students who have not registered for lessons. They can also monitor that students are attending meal times.

Boarding Residences & Boarding Life

Arranged by gender and age, the boarding residences are managed by at least one Boarding Parent living in the residence:

The Boarding Parent is there for the students to talk to and will check regularly on the student’s welfare

Electronic/key entry to bedrooms
Set weekday bedtime for students: Juniors(21:30) & Seniors(22:00)

IT/Computer Safety

All buildings have WiFi but it is switched off from midnight until 0600 to ensure students have a good night’s sleep. There is a robust Firewall in place.

Orientation Sessions

A series of sessions to introduce students to life in the UK and promote student safety, including:

Road safety
Security of mobile phones and other personal possessions
Dangers of peer abuse
Online safety
Staying safe in the UK

Supervised Access

Students have supervised or restricted access to key areas such as:

Swimming pool
Outdoor pursuits
Science laboratories
Art rooms
Sports halls

CCTV and Security Team

The Security team ensures the campus is a safe and secure place to live and study with their extensive CCTV system monitored regularly. Security personnel check all visitors in and out of campus from our custom gate house.

Cancellation

The cancellation of the course must be made in writing (email, or post) in legible and unambiguous English. Any cancellation shall only be of effect from the date it is received by us in writing and the following fees shall apply (before the Start Date):

50+ days : 50% of the total amount

0-50 Days: 100% of the total amount

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they obtain the appropriate VISA for their time in the UK covering the course dates, and that they comply with all other UK entry requirements. Under no circumstances will the course organizer make any refund on grounds of lack of visa or similar travel documents required to enter the UK legitimately. In a situation where a course needs to be cancelled due to a visa rejection (and upon supply of the original visa rejection letter at least 45 days before the start date) all fees will be refunded minus an administration fee of £850.

English Level	Category	At this level you can understand:
A1	Beginner	Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
A2	Elementary	Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

C1	Advanced	Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
