Overview

On the Performing Arts stream of Young Professionals, students gain an insight to careers in performing arts through working with professionals in the sector. All workshops and tuition are provided and delivered in partnership with West End On Demand. All workshop leaders are current west end performers and are held in a variety or London theatres and studios. The course offers a fantastic opportunity to train with West End cast members and learn more about world famous West End theatre.

Ideal for students interested in pursuing a career in the arts. Students receive a variety of workshops including Music, Drama, Dance based around popular west end theatre productions.
Students receive a combination of classroom theory-based teaching, as well as practical sessions.
Each week, students go on a ‘Study-in-Action’ excursion, to a destination related to their chosen career.
The course is operated by Bucksmore Education, which is founded in 1980, history of 39 years, accredited by British Council and English UK, and awarded by the EL Gazette of the Centre of Excellence 2018.

Tonbridge School

Part of the ‘Eton Group’, Tonbridge School is one of the most exclusive and prestigious independent boarding schools in the country. It hosts Young Professionals UK with subjects available in: Art & Design, Business & Finance, Forensic Science & Criminology, International Relations & Law and Performing Arts.

Situated just to the north of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge School is located on the edge of the quaint market town Tonbridge, less than an hour’s drive from London. During students’ free time, they are welcome to sign out of the school in small groups to explore Tonbridge’s selection of shops and cafés or relax by the River Medway that runs through its centre.

Tonbridge School was first established in 1553 by Sir Andrew Judde and King Edward VI. Today, Tonbridge is one of the most highly-regarded and exclusive boarding schools in the country and forms part of the ‘Eton Group’ of schools. For the first few hundred years of the school’s existence, Tonbridge kept the number of its students below 100. Then, in the 19th century, the school undertook a large expansion and quadrupled its capacity. The school now boasts an array of high-quality facilities with its 150-acre site, including modern classrooms, a recently refurbished library, a large chapel, lecture theatres and an excellent sports centre – equipped with a swimming pool, sports hall, tennis courts, athletics track and extensive playing fields.

Tonbridge

The borough of Tonbridge and Malling lies in the Heart of Kent, an area with a rich cultural heritage and spectacular scenery. The castles, stately homes, gardens, vineyards, animal farms, craft centres and country walks are all set in beautiful undulating countryside.

Programme Details

Lessons

‘Young Professionals’ receive a variety of teaching styles, including theory lessons, practical sessions and group project work. Students choose one subject per week and receive a combination of classroom theory-based teaching, as well as practical sessions. Sample topics covered:

Expert Tutors:

Students receive tuition from West End On Demand’s own theatre professionals

Workshop Content:

Script work and drama exercises
Choreography straight from West End shows
Ensemble Skills and teamwork
Exercises to boost confidence and creativity

Transport:

Students will travel to and from the London theatre by train and underground accompanied by a Bucksmore member of staff

Academic hours consist of the following per week:

9 hours subject theory (classroom based,in the mornings).
6 hours subject practicals (workshop based teaching in the afternoons)
7 hours group project work (subject based)
3 hours of skills electives

Practical sessions:

Subjects are most enjoyed when students have the opportunity to get out of their chairs and experience their chosen areas first-hand.
These afternoon periods will allow students to truly understand their selected subjects

Activities

One parts of the ‘Off-site activities’ is ‘study-in-action days’. Study-in-action days have a larger academic element, as students visit destinations within that provide real- life experiences relating to their chosen subject area. Thursday is a full day of study-in-action days. Sample of the ‘study-in-action days’:

West End Les Misérables

Students will get an insight into the world of west end performers with a back stage tour of Les Misérables and a chance to see the production.

Excursions

Excursions are a relaxed way for students to visit famous landmarks and attractions with the whole group. Students will have a full day exursion on Saturday. Examples of the full-day excursion:

Windsor (Week 1)

Students are given the opportunity to visit the home of the British Royal Family at their residence Windsor Castle and explore the historic market town.

London (Week 2 &4)

This popular tour visits sites such as Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, Horse Guards Parade, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament & Westminster Abbey.

Cambridge (Week 3)

Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is the heart of the city of Cambridge. The city’s skyline is dominated by the university’s college buildings including King’s College Chapel, Cavendish Laboratory, and the Cambridge University Library.

Accommodation

Tonbridge School is part of the ‘Eton Group’ and one of the most exclusive and prestigious independent boarding schools in the country. It hosts Young Professionals UK with subjects available in: Art & Design, Business & Finance, Forensic Science & Criminology, International Relations & Law and Performing Arts.

Accommodation is provided in single or twin bedrooms with separate male and female accommodation and bathrooms are shared between 4-6 students. Laundry is available onsite and free of charge. Students take residence in one of the school’s boarding houses, equipped with a games room, cinema room and social areas.

Airport Transfer

Bucksmore offers a complimentary airport transfer service on transfer days for flights arriving/departing between 10:00 and 20:00 at either London Heathrow Airport (LHR) or London Gatwick Airport (LGW).

Students requesting private transfers outside of these destinations and times will be subject to additional charges.

Meal

All meal included. Healthy meals with a mix of English and international dishes served. Vegetarian options are always available. Special dietary requirements are accommodated.

Care

Every Bucksmore location has a residential management team, and a minimum staff-student ratio of 1:7. High staff to student ratios ensure all students are looked after. There is always a trained first aider on-site, and students are supervised 24 hours a day. They take great pride in the excellence of their academic content, the excitement of their social programme, and most importantly, the safety and wellbeing of all Bucksmore students.

Staff

Each location has a Centre Manager, Activity Manager and Director of Studies available for all students to approach with any problems. Bucksmore Counsellors are more than just teachers; they provide a high level of care and guidance for all students. All staff are background checked.

Pastoral Care

Bucksmore summer schools strive to create a warm and welcoming “family atmosphere” where all students and Counsellors know each other well.

Cancellation

The cancellation of the course must be made in writing (email, or post) in legible and unambiguous English. Any cancellation shall only be of effect from the date it is received by us in writing and the following fees shall apply (before the Start Date):

30+ days : 35% of the total amount

7-29 Days: 70% of the total amount

0-6 Days: 100% of the total amount

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they obtain the appropriate VISA for their time in the UK covering the course dates, and that they comply with all other UK entry requirements. Under no circumstances will the course organizer make any refund on grounds of lack of visa or similar travel documents required to enter the UK legitimately. In a situation where a course needs to be cancelled due to a visa rejection (and upon supply of the original visa rejection letter at least 7 days before the start date) all fees will be refunded minus an administration fee of £350.

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, teaching, assessment, (CEFR), was created by the Council of Europe to be a language standard that describes the ability of English language learners in speaking, reading, writing and listening and measures learners’ learning outcomes at different stages.

This standard is widely recognised and used by educational institutions, enterprises and governments around the world and provides general guidance for the development of language syllabuses, curriculum and textbook design, language testing, etc.

Additionally, many internationally recognised English language tests, such as IELTS and Aptis, are associated with this standard as a reference for test score grading.
