Overview

Designed in line with independent school teaching methodology, Boarding School Experience introduces young students to life at a British boarding school. The curriculum covers the three core subjects in British schools; English Language & Literature, Mathematics and Science, as well as ‘Entrance Test Preparation’ sessions, which develop skills in aptitude and reasoning tests, interview practice and common entrance exam areas.

King Edward’s School

King Edward’s is a prestigious boarding school founded by King Edward VI in 1553. The school has excellent on-site facilities including modern classrooms with smart boards, a dance studio, and all-weather pitches across the 100-acre site. The school is located in a quiet countryside village just over an hour’s drive from central London, providing an ideal location for young summer school students. Nearby cities can be accessed easily including Brighton, Canterbury, Windsor and Oxford.

 

The school has a unique place in the story of British education. Christian vision, a Tudor palace and a boy King (Edward VI) each feature in the creation of our distinctive school. Care and friendliness permeate our day to day life on campus. Visitors often comment on the happy, relaxed yet purposeful and supportive atmosphere in School. Boys and girls, some of whom are brothers and sisters, mix naturally whatever their social or cultural backgrounds. Any well-ordered community needs basic rules and leaders. We therefore try to develop leadership at all levels and an understanding of responsibility in every aspect of school life. In senior years, pupils are encouraged to take on roles within the school community and to develop a sense of service to others.

An ancient market and coaching town delightfully situated on the picturesque River Wey, where to this day cattle graze on the waterside meadows and canal boats rest up against the wharf. Godalming boasts many local, wonderful attractions such as National Trust properties, the town’s sports facilities and historic and cultural places of interest. Local festivals abound and a warm welcome is assured. Unique, historic and interesting architecture can be found in abundance in the High Street and Church Street along with walks in our delightful countryside.

Programme Details

Lessons

The British Boarding School Experience is designed in line with independent school teaching methodology. The curriculum covers the three core subjects at Key Stage 3 in British schools: English language & literature, mathematics and science.

 

In addition to the English, science and mathematics tuition, boarders will receive five hours of boarding school entrance preparation, focusing on common entrance tests and aptitude testing.

 

English Literature

 

The overall aim of the second part of the course is to enhance students’ understanding of spoken and written English outside the language classroom and to enable them to be more proficient in presenting their ideas both orally and in writing.

 

The lessons will include more in-depth language analysis from a language change point of view which will provide a taster of what is taught in (British) secondary schools.

 

Debating and drama will enable students to further hone their presentation and self-expression skills and better understand and apply the rhetorical conventions of English.

 

Mathematics

 

Through an introduction to and consolidation of algebra, geometry and forms of calculations, students will be better able to reason logically and mathematically which will help not only their mathematical skills but will also improve their verbal fluency and accuracy.

 

The topics covered will not only build on students’ existing skills but will also prepare them for entrance into (British) secondary education. There is equal focus on all branches of mathematics to provide a real variety of skills during the two weeks.

 

Science

 

Building on a well-rounded science programme, the week introduces students to a variety of subjects in a cross-sectional interdisciplinary tuition in science where, for instance, learning biology helps to better describe and understand matters in chemistry and forces in physics. Students also integrate their knowledge of mathematics linked closely to science to study and describe what they learnt.

 

Boarding School Entrance Preparation

 

The entrance preparation will help students to successfully tackle entrance exams not only in the UK but in their home countries, too. The skills acquired during the course will hone students’ exam taking and preparation techniques combined with critical thinking training and practice of presentation skills.

Activities

Students have a full programme of fun activities to enable them to gain a better cultural understanding of the United Kingdom and create lasting memories. The activity programme are planned and organised by a dedicated Activity Manager. They will respond to student feedback and requests and provide exact weekly timetables a few days before the start of the following week. Students take on different sporting challenges in teams which challenge students’ agility, spatial awareness and teamwork skills

 

Egg Drop Challenge

 

Students compete in teams to create protective wrapping for their eggs so that when it is thrown from a great height it will survive, unbroken.

 

Lip Sync Battle

 

A student favourite, each team has the opportunity to put their best foot forward and pick a song to lip sync to. Performing hit songs in English, students build their confidence while having fun.

 

Sports Choice

 

A variety of different sporting options are available for students, such as tennis, swimming, football, netball, touch rugby, cricket, basketball and badminton.

Excursions

Students have two full-day excursions per week to enable them to explore and gain a better cultural understanding of the United Kingdom. Each week students will go to a leading boarding school and another popular UK destination. The excursions are planned and organised by a dedicated Activity Manager. They will respond to student feedback and requests and provide exact weekly timetables a few days before the start of the following week. It enables the Activity Manager to minimise any repetition and give students a unique experience every week. Examples of the excursions:

 

BOARDING SCHOOL VISITS (Every Week)

 

Students visit two boarding schools and explore the town or city near the schools. Examples of boarding schools: Ashford School, Whitgift School, Ardingly College, Christ’s Hospital, Lancing College and more.

 

Windsor

 

Students are given the opportunity to visit the home of the British  Royal Family at their residence Windsor Castle and explore the  historic market town.

 

Chessington

 

Students visit Chessington World of Adventure theme park with 10 themed lands and over 40 exciting rides. They will also visit Chessington Zoo which has over 1,000 animals including western lowland gorillas, sea lions, and Sumatran tigers.

 

Oxford

 

Oxford’s rivalry with Cambridge runs back more than 800 years. On a tour of the city, students will see landmarks such as Carfax Tower, Bodleian Library, Christ Church Cathedral, the ‘Bridge of Sighs’ & many Oxford University Colleges.

 

Brighton

 

Arguably Britain’s most popular seaside resort, students visiting Brighton can choose to spend free time shopping in the famous ‘Laines’, or visit the beach and Brighton’s celebrated pier.

Accommodation

King Edward’s is a prestigious boarding school founded by King Edward VI in 1553. The school has excellent on-site facilities including modern classrooms with smart boards, a dance studio, and all-weather pitches across the 100-acre site.

 

Student accommodation at King Edward’s is split into several boarding houses, named Edward, Tudor and Ridley. Bedrooms are made up of single, twin and 4-bed rooms, with separate female and male accommodation. Bathrooms are shared between 4-6 students. Laundry is available on site. Once per week, laundry will be collected by King Edward’s School staff and returned the next day.

Cancellation

The cancellation of the course must be made in writing (email, or post) in legible and unambiguous English. Any cancellation shall only be of effect from the date it is received by us in writing and the following fees shall apply (before the Start Date):

 

30+ days : 35% of the total amount

7-29 Days: 70% of the total amount

0-6 Days: 100% of the total amount

 

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they obtain the appropriate VISA for their time in the UK covering the course dates, and that they comply with all other UK entry requirements. Under no circumstances will the course organizer make any refund on grounds of lack of visa or similar travel documents required to enter the UK legitimately. In a situation where a course needs to be cancelled due to a visa rejection (and upon supply of the original visa rejection letter at least 7 days before the start date)  all fees will be refunded minus an administration fee of £350.
