Exam

The Trinity examination is a one-to-one speaking and listening test that lasts for 5-25 minutes according to the grade. The higher the level, the longer the exam. Depending on the grade of the exam taken, students ask and answer questions, exchange opinions, respond to comments and generally interact in English using the appreciate language for their level. Last year the school pass rate was 99%, with 86% achieving Merit or Distinction.

IELTS examination (available at Rugby School English Summer Programme)is designed to test the language ability of people who want to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. IELTS is the world’s most popular English test for higher education with over 2.5 million tests taken each year, therefore, it is widely accepted as part of university recruitment or admission procedures around the world and is recognised for entrance to 100% of UK universities. IELTS candidates receive a score equivalent to the Cambridge English B1, B2, C1, or even C2. There is no pass or fail result. The results are sent by the official exam board directly to the students approximately 2 weeks after the exam date.

School

Epsom College

Epsom College is a leading independent co-educational boarding and day school in Surrey catering for both boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 18. The College is just 22kms from Central London and 15 minutes’ walk from Epsom town centre – a lively, small town in the prosperous commuter belt of London. Heathrow and Gatwick airports are less than 45 minutes by coach.

The campus may be relatively compact, but there is no shortage of facilities. There is a large sports centre with two sports halls, squash courts and a 25 metre indoor swimming pool. You’ll also find 18 tennis courts, an indoor shooting range and extensive games fields in 32 hectares of magnificent grounds. The school is justly proud of its new state-of-the-art studios for music, drama, film and dance. Lighting, sound and multi-media facilities here are up to the highest professional standards.

Destination

Epsom

Epsom is a market town in Surrey, England. It is best known for its racing pedigree, through the internationally famous Epsom Racecourse. Yet the area boasts so much more, Epsom’s Playhouse Theatre has a reputation for top quality drama, music and comedy, the nearby Ashley Centre offers all the High Street names and a host of independent retailers.

Visit Surrey for theme parks to take your breath away, fast racehorses and even faster cars and scenic downs. Village churches, meadow-covered hilltops and woodland in this southeast county have made their way into Hollywood blockbusters like Gladiator and Bridget Jones. Lace up your walking shoes to explore forests, commons and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty hills shaped like punchbowls. Or speed along wooded disused railway lines by bicycle. Feeling parched? Riverside pubs and vineyards are Surrey specialities. On rainy days retreat to Palladian mansions and Henry VIII palaces. Top places to visit in Surrey include Hampton Court Palace, the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, Leith Hill and the Hogs Back Brewery.

Programme Details

Lessons

There are five 40-minute lessons every morning, five days a week (total contact time 16 hours and 40 minutes). Students will follow the multi-activity recreational programme of the school in the afternoons and evenings.

  • Lesson 1-3 focus on conversational and interactive language tasks
  • Lesson 4-5 focus on topics required by Trinity for the examination (subjects such as global warming, fashion, festivals, music, shopping and travel) and/ or excursion preparation.

Level

On the first day of the course, students have an oral assessment to determine the appropriate class and level at which they prepare for the examination. Teachers make this decision based on students’ ability to use English to communicate, not on just the grammar areas they have covered at school.

The Trinity exam levels are linked to the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) levels. At Ascot and Leatherhead, students prepare for the examination at grades 1-9 (Beginner to upper intermediate); at Epsom and Rugby, grades 1-11 (Beginner to advanced).

Materials

Each student receives a Trinity Student Book, which has been designed by the organiser’s team of language experts (who between them have over 50 years’ experience) to support students in preparation for their exam. They also use up-todate published course books, which are regularly reviewed to ensure that students always have relevant, interesting and contemporary material.

The Trinity student book also includes materials that link academic content to many of the excursions students will do.

Why choose this course?

The Trinity GESE is an internationally recognized qualification and is widely accepted by universities, schools and employers around the world as evidence of the ability to communicate in English. The Trinity certificate has no expiry date and is valid for life.

English Level Requirement : CEFR and Language Assessment

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, teaching, assessment, (CEFR), was created by the Council of Europe to be a language standard that describes the ability of English language learners in speaking, reading, writing and listening and measures learners’ learning outcomes at different stages.

This standard is widely recognised and used by educational institutions, enterprises and governments around the world and provides general guidance for the development of language syllabuses, curriculum and textbook design, language testing, etc.

Additionally, many internationally recognised English language tests, such as IELTS and Aptis, are associated with this standard as a reference for test score grading. In describing a language learner’s ability, in terms of speaking, reading, listening and writing, CEFR is broadly categorised into the Levels below:
